Electrical products from abroad: voltage, plug and what to check before buying
A short checklist for fitting the voltage and the sockets in Israel, and why a standards approval is a separate matter.

Voltage and frequency
In Israel the mains voltage is about 230 volts and 50 Hz. A product meant only for 110 volts (common in the US) may burn out. Look on the product or in the specifications for the range, for example 100–240V, which suits both networks.
Plug and socket
The Israeli socket supports the Israeli plug, and usually also a small flat European plug. An American or British plug requires an adapter, and should not be forced in. An adapter does not change the voltage.
What to check on the product page
- **Voltage (Input):** what is written next to Input, and the range.
- **The plug:** which plug the product comes with, and ask the seller if it is unclear.
- **Power (watts):** strong products (heaters, hair dryers) load cheap adapters.
- **Built-in or external transformer:** an external charger with 100–240V is usually safer.
- **Reviews with photos** of the plug of the product that actually arrived.
Standards and safety
An Israeli standards approval is shown only according to the authorized bodies, first of all the Standards Institution. For the personal import of an electrical product the requirements differ from commercial import, so if in doubt contact the Standards Institution. In any case: don't charge cheap products unattended, and don't use a damaged charger.

Plug, voltage and standards
In Israel a type H plug is used (or C and M on some devices) and a voltage of 230 volts. A product that arrives with a different plug needs an adapter, and a product meant for another voltage may be damaged. Look in the specifications for the range, for example 100–240V, which allows use anywhere.
Products charged with a USB cable
Small products charged with a USB cable, such as lights, small fans and event accessories, are usually safer in terms of voltage, because they use a charger. It is still worth making sure the charger you use is certified, and not to charge a product with a battery near a flammable material.
What to check before buying
- Voltage and operating range in the specifications.
- The type of plug and whether an adapter is needed.
- Whether the product includes a battery, and what type.
- Reviews about overheating or odors during charging.
Products with a battery
Products with a rechargeable battery require extra care: charge them with the original charger, don't leave them charging unattended, and don't use a product whose battery swelled or overheated. Reviews that mention a burnt smell or unusual heat are a reason to give up the purchase.
Questions and answers
Can a 110 volt product be used in Israel?
Not directly. A product meant only for 110 volts may be damaged on a 230 volt network. Look for a product with a 100–240V range.
